The DBU uses the expertise of external experts for the written review of grant applications. Funding decisions are made by a selection committee composed of professors from various disciplines and appointed by the Secretary General of the DBU.
Scholarship applications thus go through a multi-stage selection process. First, we evaluate which applications are suitable for external professional review based on professional criteria and the applicant’s personal qualifications. Otherwise, the committee, which consists of alternating representatives of the selection panel, will decide on rejection without peer review.
After evaluation of the review, the applicants with the most promising doctoral projects will be invited for an interview. This interview is conducted with the selection committee in German and takes place annually in May or October (for applications received by January 15 or June 15). After a 10-minute presentation on the PhD concept, open questions will be discussed, especially with regard to objective, choice of methods and environmental reference. In addition to scientific quality, the personal commitment of the applicant also plays a role in the decision-making process.
