Marine nature conservation

Marine nature conservation – protection and preservation of the ecological diversity of the North and Baltic Seas.

Scholarship focus on marine conservation

With the new funding theme “Marine Nature Conservation Fund”, the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) will in future expand its funding activities in the area of “Marine nature conservation – protection and preservation of the ecological diversity of the North and Baltic Seas”. In order to provide targeted support for young scientists in this area, we are preparing to set up a funding priority in the doctoral scholarship program. This focus will support doctoral theses in all disciplines that contribute to the protection and conservation of marine ecosystems in the North and Baltic Seas.

Interested parties can apply immediately, i.e. with the next application round in June 2025, with a corresponding doctoral project via the normal application procedure. Applications will also be possible in January and June 2026. The funding guidelines of the doctoral scholarship program apply. Suitable projects will be assigned to the priority area in consultation with the funding recipients.

Fellowship priorities open up extended opportunities for cooperation, exchange and networking with other stakeholders and DBU activities in the field of marine conservation, both within the fellowship program and beyond. Added value results in particular from the link with DBU project funding and the Green Start-up Program. The focus areas offer participants many opportunities and possibilities. At the same time, we expect an increased willingness to participate in the offers and own commitment in shaping the focus area. The coordination is supported by Professor Maren Voss, Leibnitz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde, IOW.
